The People: There is majesty in every man of Udaipur in Rajasthan; they are after all the sons of kings. Rajasthan is a harsh, scorched land of savage summer heat but also full of the brightest colours. Countering the barren landscape with vibrant hues in their everyday wear and charming murals painted on their drab sepia-coloured mud homes, for the people, life is one big carnival. Even in the face of sure death. Here are many tales of desperate courage writ. Of men donning saffron robes and riding out to confront the enemy and women folk preferring death to dishonour. Even in everyday life today, the Rajput's sense of honour, family and tradition come foremost.

Culture: Rajasthan has made its contribution to Indian art; there is a rich literary tradition, especially of bardic poetry. Chand Bardai's poem Prithvi Raj Raso or Chand Raisa, the earliest manuscript of which dates to the 12th century, is particularly notable. A popular source of entertainment is the khyal, a dance drama composed in verse with festive, historical, or romantic themes. The typical folk dance of Rajasthan is the ghoomar, which is performed on festive occasions only by women. The geer dance, the panihari and the kacchi ghori are also popular.

Importance of Hotel Virtual Tours and High-quality Photography for Hotels

By: VRteam

If you are a hotel professional then you probably know the importance of online marketing, in regards to achieving sales goals and high online conversion rates.آ  There are many pieces to this complex puzzle, but the purpose of this article is to focus on one important piece that is often overlooked by hotel general managers, management companies, and sales managers alike. That piece of the puzzle is online rich media, specifically hotel virtual tours and high-quality photography.

Online rich media can mean many different things to hoteliers and to potential guests.آ  Rich media can be a 360 degree interactive virtual tour.آ  It can be a web-based streaming video that is able to be shared with others.آ  It can be an interactive Flash presentation or application. It can also be an interactive photo slideshow. Rich media can be downloaded to a user's computer, presented on a CD or DVD, and/or distributed and viewed via the Internet.آ  The main point here is that rich media engages people and puts them in control of the content that they are viewing.

In the hotel industry, rich media allows potential guests to immerse themselves in a property prior to actually booking a reservation.آ  It allows people to educate themselves and make informed decisions before actually pulling out their credit cards to book a stay at a hotel or resort.آ  Needless to say, the rich media that is produced for a property must accurately reflect what the property actually has to offer.آ  How many times have you gone online to book a hotel room and were presented with outdated photos and virtual tours that paint a horrible picture of the property, only to find out later that the property has recently been fully remodeled with new bedding, flat screen televisions, landscaping and other amenities?آ  That property is cutting themselves short and losing business. Or even worse, have you ever been presented with generalized media that does not accurately reflect the actual property that you are booking a room with.آ  You arrive for check-in and are astonished by the poor condition of the hotel and the room you are about to stay in. You tell the front desk staff or the manager, "This isn't the same place I saw online!"آ  The importance of rich media in a hotel's overall marketing plan cannot be stressed enough.آ  Keeping this media current is very important.

According to recent industry statistics, over half of all Internet users have taken virtual tours and the numbers are increasing daily.آ  Millions of people view hotel virtual tours, online hotel videos, hotel photo slideshows, and hotel photos online each and every single day!آ  At the end of 2007, approximately 300 million people were surfing the Internet over a broadband connection, opening up an extremely large audience that can experience rich media without waiting a long time for content to download.آ  Hoteliers must realize the value of rich media content and the influence it has on its potential guests' decision making.آ  Hoteliers need to provide high quality content to the ever-increasing population of broadband Internet users in order to compete in the current marketplace.

Inflation, war, high fuel costs, and airlines that nickel-and-dime their passengers are all working against the hospitality industry.آ  According to the Travel Industry Association, "The July Travel Price Index, TPI, rose 9.4 percent compared to July 2007. Gasoline prices increased 0.7 percent from June and jumped 38.3 percent from one year ago. Lodging prices were down 0.2 percent compared to July 2007 and increased 3.1 percent from last month. Airfares increased 19.9 percent against twelve months earlier and rose 2.1 percent from previous month. The Consumer Price Index, or CPI-U, was up 5.6 percent from July 2007."

Some of the other big cities of Norway are Bergen, Trondheim with population of around 150,000 and Stavanger with population of 110,000.

The topography of Norway is not that much friendly and can be called very intense. It contains some very high plateaus, steep fjords, mountains and some very fertile valleys. The climate is also full of varieties and it can be very pleasant around the coastal areas and surprisingly cooler in the inner part of the country. Because of its northern most position on the globe, it experiences long days during summer season and long nights during winter season. During summer, you can witness sunlight until the midnight and therefore, Norway is also known as the land of midnight sun.

As far as the people of Norway are concerned, they are very friendly. People living there are known as Norwegians. As per the latest population count, which was held in 2006, the population of Norway was 4,593,000. The population is not increasing very fast as the annual growth rate is only .41 percent. A surprising fact is that there is only one person for every 15 square miles of land. Most of the people living in Norway are the blend of people from all the Scandinavian countries. The main majority is the mix of Nordic, Alpine and Baltic people who have intermixed with each other for centuries now. People of Norway do not believe in migrating to some other place hence, the immigration rate is very low. It was registered that there were only 300,000 immigrants in 2006.

From the religion point of view, Norwegians are very particular and finicky. More than 87 percent of total of Norwegian people believe in Christianity as their religion and have very firm faith on the church of Norway. The church of Norway is under the Lutheran concept of preaching. Although, Christianity is the widely spread religion but you can also find some Pentecostal Christians, Roman Catholics and Muslims in very small percentages.

Norwegians basically speak two languages i.e. Bokmal Norwegian and Nynorsk. However Norwegian is widely spoken and is the chief language which is taught in the school system. But still, some Sأ،mi and Finish speaking communities can also be found here but not much in number. The literacy of Norway is very close to 100 percent. Also, the life expectancy is very high as the Norwegian male can live up to 76 years and females there can live up to 81 years.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Crew Life – Behind the Scenes Onboard a Cruise Ship

Have you ever wondered what it’s like working onboard a cruise ship? Below the passenger decks is a whole other world that we rarely see or hear about. Here we give you an opportunity to find out what really goes on down there…

Laura Fletcher, 26, recently returned from her position as shore excursion staff with Norwegian Cruise Lines. She has worked on the Norwegian Star, Spirit and Pearl on itineraries around Alaska and the Caribbean. In our interview, Laura tells us the good, the bad and the ugly of her time onboard.

How did you manage to get a job on a cruise ship?

With great difficulty! I initially applied directly to the cruise lines, but received very little response. I then did a bit more research and decided that NCL was the company I wanted to work for, I then applied to an agency in Southampton that dealt with cruise ship placements, and they quickly found a position that was suitable for me.

What was your position onboard?

I worked as part of the shore excursions team, so I was responsible for organizing and selling tours as well as ensuring the trips went smoothly and of course dealing with any problems that may arise, which they usually did! My first contract was for 5 months in Alaska, followed by a 2 month break, then I flew out and joined the Norwegian Spirit in the Caribbean. My final contract was on the beautiful Norwegian Pearl in Mexico.

What were your first impressions of life onboard?

Boarding the ship for the first time was very daunting, I remember our coach arriving in the Port of Seattle, and seeing the Norwegian Star. It was the first cruise ship I had ever seen and initially I just thought about how tiny I felt against the 14 deck ship in front of me!

Once onboard, it was all very overwhelming. There was so much to take in and learn, ship safety procedures, destinations on the itinerary and tours offered all had to be learned inside out.

Before I left the UK, although everyone said it was hard work, I must admit, I thought my experience would be about seeing the world, the people I’d meet and some work, in that order.

At this point, the reality of the work kicked in! I think I had underestimated how much I would be doing and the responsibility I had taken on.

Once the passengers arrived, and the tours began, I started seeing all the places I had learned about onboard and experienced each of the shore excursions first hand. After a few weeks I had been on every tour and explored each part of the destination by land, air and sea!

What was your accommodation like?

During my first contract, I got lucky and shared my cabin with just one other crew member. The cabin was pretty large, en suite with my own drawers and cupboard space. When I started my second contract, on the Norwegian Spirit, I ended up in a top bunk in a much smaller cabin.

Does the accommodation vary depending on job role?

Yes, whilst all cabins are en suite, they do vary in size and numbers sharing each cabin. For example, house keeping staff may share a cabin with 4-6 others, whereas cruise staff get a slightly better deal and will usually end up sharing with just 4-2 others. All were comfortable and cabins were viewed purely for sleeping in.

What happens at meal times?

Meals are available to crew at 3 set times a day, with snacks available in between. Food wasn’t bad, although nothing like the guests were being served! We would always make the most of the local food when we were on a break and in port, local delicacies and fresh fish beats the crew meals every time!

How many days off did you get each week?

None! Crew members work pretty much every day of the week with a few hours off here and there. During my little free time I would be straight off the ship and into the port, or, if it was a place I had already explored I would use the time to do laundry or just relax. There was also a gym, a pool, games room and a bar for crew to make use of in free time. We made the most of free evenings with crew parties and other fun events organized by crew welfare, this is when we would often get passengers poking their heads around doors to see where all the fun was really happening!

What was the hardest part of your job…?

Without a doubt, the long hours. It was hard work, but the job itself was wonderful, I had good days, when customers thanked me for recommending great tours, and bad days, which made being away from home, friends and family so much harder. Each cabin had a telephone and we had calling cards, so there were plenty of opportunities to call home when things weren’t going so good.

Having to remain polite when passengers were rude was also very challenging for me!

…And the best part?

The places you get to see! No other job lets you go kayaking in Dominica one day, then sunbathing in Mexico the next. Working and living with a great group of people means you build close relationships with people from all over the world.

Were there ever any crew – passenger romances?

No never! Any staff caught having a relationship with passengers would have been sacked. Funnily enough, it seemed to be the passengers trying their luck with the crew members after a few too many cocktails at the 70’s or 80’s party nights!

How did the crew get paid?

Wages were settled through finance and were paid directly into my bank account back home. For onboard spending we had crew cards which were linked to our accounts.

Depending on your position, you get paid different wages. Those who are in direct contact with passengers will get paid cash tips in addition to their set wage. The crew who are not involved directly, such as laundry staff, don’t get a share of the tips, and are on a much lower wage. These tend to be crew that can’t speak English to a high enough standard. This may seem harsh, but when you consider all food, accommodation and living expenses are taken care of by the cruise line, the money they receive is all theirs to keep.

What skills do you think someone would need to do the job?

For my particular role, you definitely have to be a people person to be able to interact with all different kinds of people. You have to be extrovert, sociable and know how to have fun! It is also really important to be responsible; looking after a group of people who are in a strange country away from home is a big job, so you have to have good leadership skills too.

So next time you go cruising, spare a thought for the “other worldâ€‌ onboard and the excellent job they do which makes your experience what it is.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Greek Italy - Una Faccia Una Razza

Much of Southern Italy was colonised by Greeks 2500 years ago, and these areas form what we still know today as Magna Grecia (Greater Greece). As a result, Southern Italy became a centre of Greek culture, music, and language for hundreds of years. Greece has in the past also been occupied by Romans and Italians. To this day, we can see the Greek influence in Italy, and Italian influence in Greece, through architecture, music, food and language. Naples, for example, was a city founded by the Greeks, and it's name derives from the Greek Nea Polis (New City). Naples was also a Greek speaking town until the 9th century BC. It is an ancient Greek city, with a 'secret abandoned' underground city, where there are many original city walls, and even a Greek-Roman theatre where the famous Emperor Nero used to perform opera! The underground city can be visited on guided tours organised by Napoli Sottoteranea -'Napoli Underground'. In Piazza Bellini in the centre, you can also see some Greek ruins of the original city.Agrigento, Sicily, is famous for Valle dei Templi (Valley of Temples), one of the most important archelogical sites in the world, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are many Doric Greek temples just outside the main centre of Agrigento, including Temple of Hercules, Temple of Zeus and Temple of Concord. The Sicilian town of Siracusa was also an ancient Greek town. The Greeks arrived here in 734BC and named the small Island of Ortigia in Siracusa after 'ortgyia', the Greek word for 'quail', as it was 'quail shaped'. (how did they know what it looked like from above...?) They also built various temples, such as the Temple of Apollo in the central Piazza Pancali, and the Temple of Athena. They also built the Arethusa fountain, named after the legendary nymph of Arethusa, which is now a 'hangout' for local youngsters. Also, inland from the main Siracusa centre, they built the biggest theatre in Sicily.

With many areas of Southern Italy speaking Greek for many years, (Naples was Greek speaking until the 9th century) it's no surprise that there is some Greek influence to be found in some accents or dialects in the South. Admittedly the Greek language on the whole is very different, but there are a few words that still remain. With the Romans also having occupied Greece, some words also may have been brought into the Greek language by the Romans.....Griko and Graecanic are languages spoken by the Italians living in the Bovesia Calabria region, and could be described as an Italian-Greek pidgin languages. These languages are dying out, and there has been a law brought in to protect them, although some believe it may be too late.

Greek, Arabic and Spanish influence on Southern Italian music can be heard from listening to various pieces of music and songs, both modern day and traditional, e.g. Mari by Neapolitan artist Nino D'Angelo. Traditional Southern Italian and Greek music both use similar instruments such as the mandolino (similar to the Greek bouzouki) and tamburello (tambourine), which is the most important percussion instrument in Italy's music tradition. The 'tamburello' was originally introduced via Greek influence in South Italy, and also through the Arabic influence in Sicily. The tarantella is a famous traditional Southern Italian dance and is directly related to the ritual of the cult of Dionysus (the patron god of wine) of Ancient Greece. It is named after the tarantula spider. In around the 16th and 17th centuries, people were poisoned by deadly tarantula bites from the Lycosa Tarantula, and it was believed that they could only be cured by frenetic dancing. The dance would start on a regular beat and then gradually speed up. The victim works themselves into a 'trance' and dance in a state of ecstasy so much so until they were exhausted. Once they reached exhaustion and slowed down it would be taken as a sign that they had been cured. There is obviously a lot of Greek influence on the history and music in the Magnia Grecia areas where Griko and Greacanic is spoken.

Greek and Southern Italian cuisine do share many similarities. Primarily, this is due to the fact that they are two areas of the Mediterranean situated very near each other, sharing similar climates and soils...as a result they use and grow similar products, e.g. olives and olive oil, aubergines, courgettes, peppers, garlic and tomatoes. This in turn results in similar dishes and recipes. There is also however Greek influence in some Southern Italian cuisine and vice versa, due to historical factors; Greek occupation in Southern Italy, and Roman occupation in Greece. For example, when the Romans occupied Greece, many Greek tutors were employed by rich Roman families for their children as well as Greek chefs for their kitchens...Other dishes to be compared, are the Neapolitan dish Parmigiana to the Greeks' Moussaka , (both dishes include layering similar ingredients such as aubergines, tomato sauce and cheese), Pepperonata from Campania with the Greeks' salata me psites piperies , (a charred pepper salad with olives), and Campania's melanzane a scarpetta (also know as melanzane a barchetta) to the Greeks' melitzanes papoutsakia (stuffed aubergine halves- the Italian scarpetta and Greek papoutsakia mean 'shoes' referring to how they look ).
