River Jehlum- the Life Line of Kashmir

By: Rosy Vohra

The much revered and the very enchanting river Jehlum is one of the seven rivers collectively referred to as sapta-sandhu. The river finds its mention in the ancient Indian scriptures of the Rig-Veda where is called as Vitasta. The ancient Greeks called the mighty river as Hydaspes after the titan descended god born to Thaumas-the sea god and Elektra-the cloud goddess. Hydaspes was the brother of the goddess of rainbow-Iris and Harpies- the lord of snatching winds. The historical battle between Alexander the Great and King Porus of Jehlum in 326B.C is documented as the Battle of Hydaspes. Mogul Emperor Jahangir was very fond of this river with clear blue waters and called it â€کBebat’, though its initial course is a bit muddy.

This 772 km long river of which 177 km is covered in India has an aura about it. It is sheltered amidst the huge Himalayas and moves through the beautiful Kashmir valley along its meandering course. In Srinagar alone, seven bridges are built across its width at a number of places to facilitate movement of people, goods and vehicles over it. The charming and enthralling capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is located on either side of the valley benefiting from its rich waters to sooth its land and give life to its people. The fishermen spreading their nets in the early mornings into its wide lap sitting on their shikaras boats, the floating lotus-their deep rooted stems are collected for preparing Kashmiri dish popular as nadu set as balls in rich tomato curry and relished with steamed rice is the normal everyday scene along this Grand River.

The most enchanting sight is the presence of full equipped houseboats on River Jehlum and on the Dal Lake and the equally beautiful Nagin Lake where Kashmiri families actually live. They often rent a part of these floating homes to tourists and guests at reasonable prices. During mornings and afternoons children from families living in houseboat can be seen going and coming back from regular schools. They climb down their houseboats and set on to their journey to school located on the land on the shikaras, vigorously rafted by someone from the family and come back the same way. Interestingly there are markets and small size field beds on River Jehlum and the Dal Lake to cater to the regular needs of the locals living on the water abodes. Tourists love to see this unique arrangement. When tourists pass by through the Dal Lake riding on the shikaras whilst enjoying the scenic beauty of the valley, shop keepers and their agents whisk on their shikaras to display and demonstrate their Kashmiri made products to the tourists.

River Jehlum is the tributary of River Indus. It finds its birth from the womb of a deep spring at Verinag. This is somewhere located in the south-eastern side of Kashmir at the foot of the great Pir Panjal Mountains. It gets widened as it flows in characteristic loops and curves through the heart of Srinagar until it merges with the Wular Lake-the largest freshwater lake of Asia. It then travels along a deep narrow Baramulla gorge before entering the Pakistan part of Punjab. However once it enters the deep Baramulla gorge, the river ceases to be navigable as it forms a deep bed and takes up a rapid flow. It is the most western and largest flowing rivers that enter the plains of Punjab giving life and relief to its heat drenched soil. The impressive river finally sleeps upon its mergence with river Chenab at Trimmu in Jhang in Pakistan. The Chenab then joins Satluj when it is referred to as River Panjnad. At Mithankot the Panjnad finally confluences with River Indus and enters the Arabian Sea.

How to Send Money to Thailand

By: Douglas Anderson

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - How to Send Money to Thailand

So you met this great Thai woman or man, and you know she/he is desperately poor, and you'd like to help by sending money periodically. How do you do this?

There are two ways: money transfer and debit card. The debit card method is cheaper but initially a bit more complicated.

1. Money Transfer

This method is best when you just want to send money once or a few times, not regularly.

First have her open a bank account, if she doesn't have one already, and send you the bank and account details. You can then transfer money via your bank, doing a telegraphic transfer (also called a "wire transfer" or "inter-bank transfer" or "SWIFT transfer" depending on what country you are living in). This costs US to , depending on the country you live in, and the bank you deal with, so it generally is not worthwhile unless you are sending more than 0. Some banks charge less than others, so it pays to shop around and ask what the fee is.

2. Debit Card

Open an account in a bank in your town that has the PLUS or CIRRUS symbol displayed. This means they are on an international ATM ("automated teller machine", also called "banking machine") network. PLUS and CIRRUS are both international, and do the same thing, and charge the same rates to their customers (the banks). Some banks belong to both networks, some to only one, and some to neither.

The account should be in your name. Get an ATM card (also called a "debit card" or "bank card") from the bank, put some money in the account, and use the card in any ATM to verify the card is OK by checking the balance or actually withdrawing some funds.

Mail the card to your friend in Thailand by registered mail. When she acknowledges receipt of the card, mail the PIN (the identifying number you have to enter when using the ATM card) by registered mail. Don't mail the PIN with the card in case the letter gets into someone else's hands.

She can then go to any ATM in Thailand that displays the same symbol (PLUS or CIRRUS), insert the card, enter the PIN, and withdraw any amount of cash (in Thai baht) up to the limit of what you put in the account. Your bank will automatically do a currency conversion from Thai baht to your currency. Since this is a separate account from your normal account, there is no danger that she (or anyone else if the card is stolen) can access your money in your normal bank accounts. Also, she can't withdraw any more money than what is in the account. So make sure there is no overdraft facility on the account when you open it.

Most banks will charge a fee for each withdrawal. Some banks charge as much as US, but most are less. Shop around and find a bank that has the lowest fees for international ATM transactions. (My bank charges nothing for international ATM transactions because I have a Gold Visa with them.) And tell your Thai friend to withdraw substantial amounts, not go back to the ATM every day to withdraw 100 baht, because the fees make that uneconomical.

So periodically you can transfer money into that account, and your friend can access it the same day. If you do this on a regular basis (say, at the first of every month, or the first and fifteenth), and tell your friend the arrangement, then she will know to go to the banking machine on those days and can withdraw the money.

With some banks, it is possible for the account to go negative (have an overdraft) even though overdrafts are not allowed, because she can withdraw the entire amount in the account, and the fee for international withdrawals will then be applied, pushing the account into a negative status. Some banks let you get away with this, and some charge a huge penalty (of say US). So check with your bank what their policy is. If you don't like their policy, you can do one of three things:

* change banks;

* keep an eye on the account (via the bank's Internet banking service) and transfer enough money in immediately to bring the account back up to zero; some banks will let you set up a rule that will be applied automatically to sweep money from your normal account into this account to keep the account non-negative;

* tell your Thai friend not to withdraw the entire balance, but to leave xxx Baht in the account at all times. This may or not be possible, depending on whether the ATM in Thailand tells her the balance of the account. This is a function of your bank, not the ATM or PLUS or CIRRUS. Some banks make the balance available, and some don't.

How To Save Money When Traveling

Do you know you can go on a 7-day cruise for half the price?Or visit Europe for 15 days for only $2,000 per person including airfare, hotels, car rental and meals? If you follow these steps, you can save more up to 50% in travel expenses...

Why Traveling Independently Makes Sense

By: Martin Thompson

Travel is evolving. The days of giant package holiday companies providing almost everyone with a one size fits all holiday are numbered. Not everyone is the same and the predominance of package holidays has limited the interaction with local culture, damaged the environment and failed to provide local economies with the true benefits to tourism.

The independent traveler is on the scene and with the arrival and growth of the internet individuals no longer need accept a tin sardine holiday. Low cost airlines have made it possible for individuals to make huge savings on flights especially by booking mid week and at least two weeks in advance. There has been more and more one way tickets purchased. The modern traveler wants more flexibility and will often extend or shorten their trips depending on how much they are enjoying themselves.

The package holiday companies placed massive burdens on the infrastructure and environment of summer holiday destinations such as Majorca and the Algarve. Their ability to monopolise the accommodation market and dictate pricing has not only created ghost towns that are virtually deserted for most of the year, it has also conned thousands of people with misleading real estate opportunities and created a housing bubble and surplus as well as unnecessarily spoiling miles of coastline.

There are huge benefits in renting holiday villa accommodation with the owners direct over accepting a tin sardine holiday. There are fewer middle men taking their hefty commissions for renting the villa, apartment or hotel room to you. You can save money when these savings are passed on. You get to choose exactly which property you are renting. Instead of finding yourself in a murky hotel room with a leaking sink or a green swimming pool you have the freedom to personally speak with someone you can trust and who takes pride in providing a service of a higher standard and better value for money.

The idependent traveller has far greater freedom to change their plans and discover spontaneously. The trend towards independent travel has colossal benefits for the environment and local economies. Instead of profits being siphoned off into the already inflated bank accounts of mammoth corporations, small businesses and the local economy get a bigger slice of the pie. The season is extended as independent travelers take advantage of lower prices and less competition in the shoulder and low seasons.

Independent holiday makers travel further afield and to more diverse locations off the beaten path. Instead of large concentrations of people arriving in a single location in July or August the independent traveler will venture elsewhere reducing the environmental footprint and helping the economies of more rural economies.

In the traditional package holiday situation tradition and culture were at best artificial spectacles such as a flamenco night in Tenerife and at worst local people have felt exploited and tourists unwelcome. The mammoth companies keep sending the tourists and in locations such as Majorca where the package still rules restaurant proprietors needn't worry about reputation or providing value for money because tomorrow a new load of pale faced tourists will be arriving.

With independent travel one is free. Free to choose, free to move, free to travel onwards, to follow ones intuition, to enjoy and interact with the local people, to see the real culture and to travel in a more environmentally sustainable way that benefits the local people and their economy.

Start Planning your Holidays in Greece

By: Greece

2007 has come. And definitely you have set goals for the New Year. Goals concerning your work, family, relationships, friends. All the things you wish to achieve during this year might seem a bit stressful. All the planning and the hard work might tire you even when you only think of it. If this is a case with you -too-, then please take my advice. Add within your schedule and goals, the planning of your summer vacation, too!

Why is should you follow my advise?

I can give you few, out of the hundreds reasons.

1. It is the best chance to get away from it all

On your vacation it will be only you and the ones you have chosen to spend your time with. Away from work, the phone calls, the daily to do list. There is more time to talk and spend quality time together with your travel companions without the daily distractions. The only thing you will have to do on your vacation is to relax.

2. Your life may finally become an adventure

Even if you are not particularly brave, your holidays may be full of small adventures. It is a great chance to discover the little Indiana Jones hidden inside of you. Visiting an archeological site, or discovering a remote beach, or just being in a foreign country, can be small adventures, isn’t so?

3. Re-charge your batteries

Having summer vacations, which is almost in the middle of the year, give you the chance to relax, first of all, and reflect on what you have achieved up to that point. Vacation is a revitalizing experience, which can fill you up with energy to get back home and deal successfully with all your every day issues. At the end of the day, you work hard and you deserve it!

So, having explained the importance of summer vacation let me give you some good reasons to start planning them right after you’ve read this article.

First come, first served is what you will have to keep in mind. The earlier you start planning the more chances you will have to live the vacations of your dreams! You do not want to be the one that is told, that the hotel you have chosen is fully booked or that the only tickets available offer you seats right next to the toilet…?

Not to mention the early-booking discounts you will be offered, if you book soon!

And if these are not enough, let me remind you of the excitement the whole preparation process provokes, which is also part of a successful vacation.

If everything up to know seems all right to you, and I’ve managed to persuade you, then I hope you’ll take one more piece of advice from me...

This time my advice is regarding the holiday destination you choose;

GREECE is what I highly recommend!

It is a country that offers hundreds of possibilities for all type of vacationers! Whether you want a family vacation or just send your holidays with your best pals, whether you wish to spend romantic moments with your partner or look forward to endless nights of wild clubbing, Greece offers you all these possibilities.

Sun, Sandy Beaches, Civilization & History, Modern Life and Natural Beauty all combined in one place.

2000 Greek islands, 3000 years of history are waiting for you to discover!

To make you life easier, and especially your vacation planning a joyful experience I recommend Travel Guide Greece. An internet travel agency with years of experience, 100% personalized service and the best deals you will find. Vacation and honeymoon packages, island cruises, hotels and excursions they undertake it all, and in less time that you would imagine, you will have your tailor-cut vacation package ready. If I where you, I would request Athanasia, the most helpful travel consultant I’ve met up to now.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Buying Airline Tickets Online

By: Ahmad Abdullah

Cheap airline tickets are not something that is so uncommon these days. They are without a doubt the best solution to travel for those who are having a very tight budget or can't afford to spend too much on travelling itself. It is a good thing to note that cheap airline tickets are not that hard to find and it's worth all the time it takes to find them.

Offers for cheap airline tickets can be found either by directly going to the airline company office or from the internet itself. Most people skip the hassle of visiting a high street travel agency by finding cheap airline tickets online. There are of course several advantages and disadvantages of booking and buying airline tickets from the internet.

One of the advantages of buying airline tickets online is the convenience of doing it inside your house without having to drive all the way to a travel agency office in the city. Within a few clicks, you are already taking out your credit card and preparing to confirm your booking. After a few days, the ticket is already arrived in your mailbox or ready to be picked up from the airline office itself.

In addition, there are a lot of travel websites that have the facility to compare airline ticket prices across many different airlines. You just simply specify your date and time of travel and the search engine will do the rest. Not just that, the airfare search engine will also pick up the best deals and discounts offered by any airline companies. This saves your time of having to visit each and every airline websites out there.

In recent years, there have been a lot of deals offered by airline companies and travel agencies exclusively online. That is another reason why you should check out any deals in the internet first before wasting your time driving to your local travel agent's office.

On the other hand, although the process is simple, there are a few occasions where you can get frustrated while searching for the best deal available. This can happen when you don't go to the right place to search for a cheap airline ticket. If you are jumping from one website to one website in search for your best deal, it can take you quite a long time to find one. By not doing it right, sometimes you will end up not purchasing the cheapest airline ticket available. It can get tricky if you don't know what you're doing.

Another problem when not dealing with a real person while doing your transaction online is that you won't get much help had you come across any problems or questions about the deal. If you are dealing with a travel agent, he or she might give you suggestions on what is the best deal to take and whether there is any cheaper deal available in the near future. You won't get to see much of this online.

Treasure Hunting for Fossil Fish

By: David Cowley

Fossil Fish

If there is anything that truly unites us to the past, it must be fossils.  They are a record of how life not only existed thousands and millions of years ago but there is a record of how that life was shaped and formed over those years.  Anyone interested in treasure hunting may have a particular interest in any type of antique or special find, but for some, there is no substituting the hunt for elusive fossil fish.  While you may assume that you need to travel to some far-off and exotic land and become a full-fledged Indiana Jones to find this type of treasure, in reality many have been able to come across these ancient fossils in whatever local area they live, including parts of the central United States, as well as in Germany, China, Italy, and other such areas.

To find fossil fish you of course need to get off the beaten path a bit.  Areas that are developed and suburbanized are probably not going to have many fossils readily found as the construction needed for a city or suburb is going to disturb the ground well below for the foundations of buildings.  Most of these ancient fossils are found in areas that are not quite civilized such as in deep caves and caverns or even the dessert.

Fossil Fish

For instance, the state of Wyoming has yielding some amazing finds recently when it comes to fossil fish.  Stingrays and mioplosus are common finds.  The Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming seems to contain a treasure trove of these ancient fossils from many different geological times.  The city of Kemmerer welcomes fossil treasure hunters from around the world as they too search for their finds.  There are some three million acres of public lands at which you may do some digging, and of course when you get tired of treasure hunting there is a wealth of other activities available to you as well.  At Fossil Butte National Monument you can do some exploring on your own, or if you're new to the hobby you can take a tour with a local ranger or guide.  Even children can get in on the action as they find and clean their own fossils and other treasures.

Some of the tools you will need are safety glasses, hammer, chisel and a crow bar.  The quarry area is littered with flat slabs or plates of sedentary rock that was formed on and ancient lake bed.  When the fish or plant life died they fell to the lake floor and were subsequently buried with mud and silt.  Pick up the slabs of rock and split them endwise to release the fossil treasures.

Some of the rarer fossil finds have commanded up to a quarter of a million dollars.  The fossil’s value is determined by its rarity of the specimen, the size, and the quality of the bone definition.  Wyoming is considered the fish fossil capital of the world.

Of course there really is no area of the world where you absolutely cannot find fossils.  Many have literally stumbled across very valuable finds when just out fishing or hiking or rock climbing.  While searching for fossil fish may be a bit difficult for those who are new to the activity, with the right guide and research manual you may find that this is a hobby that is well worth the pursuit.

Nice Thai Girls Versus Thai Bar Girls

By: Steven Walters

If you search the internet for stories of foreign men falling in love with Thai girls you're bound to find hundreds of posts articles and stories that have been written over the years. The funny thing is many of the stories you'll find end badly. The reason for this is pretty apparent.

Typically you'll see in the story that the writer has been warned about Thai bar girls and yet they continue on thinking "it will never happen to me". Every month there are stories to be found about Americans, Australians and Europeans either being bankrupted or even committing suicide in Pattaya and Patong over Thai bar girls. We may never know the entire truth about these tragedies, but they carry a similar theme.

What is it that makes men ignore the fact that many relationships with Thai bar girls end so badly? Why do they think that they are different and that their Thai girlfriend will work out as a romance or marriage, even though she's come from the type of life lived in the bars?

Would these men behave the same way, with the same expectations in their home countries? Would they shack up with a prostitute and expect her to be loving and faithful? I don't really think so, and it makes me scratch my head to think they have these expectations simply because they are in Thailand.

Maybe they only do this in Thailand because they can't afford it in their home countries. Or maybe they somehow lose their minds in the craziness that is Thailand. Perhaps it's their own way of coping with culture shock. Whatever the case, if you're in a relationship with a Thai girl take a look at this list of questions you should be asking yourself:

1. Does your wife or girlfriend hide her phone calls? Does she get calls at all hours of the night? Doesn't that make you suspicious? It should.

2. Is your girlfriend or wife always asking for money to send home? Is it the same amount each month? Not definitive, but could indicate a boyfriend or husband back in the home village that she is supporting.

3. If your Thai girl has piercings besides her ears or tattoos it a big warning sign of a bar girl or former bar girl. Good Thai girls don't do this. This is changing somewhat for the younger generation however so may not be conclusive if your wife or girlfriend is under 25.

4. The biggest indicator of all. Are her friends involved in prostitution? As with any other profession or lifestyle, like types tend to be drawn together because of similar experiences.

The best thing to do is just practice common sense. I know it's easy to lose your bearings when seeing all the beautiful available girls in Thailand, but try to maintain a sense of normalcy. You may not be used to so much attention from beautiful girls, but get used to it, it's just like that in Thailand for a foreigner.

Try to think with your higher brain, not the one between your legs. While your new life in Thailand may seem surreal at times try to maintain a sense of reality amongst the insanity. Keep your usual filters about what is right and wrong in place. Too many men seem to deal with the newness of Thailand by setting up a new category in their brain called "This is Thailand". Anything new or strange gets put through this filter and passes simply because "This is Thailand"" and not the same as your homeland. Some things really are the same dude.

The same evasive behavior from your girlfriend that would set off alarms in your home country should be setting off alarms here in Thailand. Just because all else is different around you doesn't mean that it's normal for your new girlfriend to hide things from you or fly off into abusive rages at no provocation.

Advantages of Corporate Housing Over Extended Stay Hotels

By: Pat Boardman

When executives are sent by their corporations on long business trips they must relocate for several weeks to several months, usually to a major city. Traditionally, the companies have made arrangements with extended stay hotels at rates reserved for corporations. Some examples of upscale extended stay hotels chains are Hilton's Homewood Suites, Marriott's Residence Inn, and Intercontinental's Staybridge Suites. Like all hotels there is no choice in the style of the unit or the furnishings so the guests must adapt to the environment.

The advent of the corporate housing industry in the mid-nineties made a variety of units available for the traveler. The corporate suites industry involves renting out vacant apartments, houses, lofts, and condos when the unit owners listing them are either landlords, property management firms, or individual owners who do not occupy the suites for part of the year (or at all). Besides variety, there are many other reasons that a guest might choose the corporate housing: the cost is about 20% less than extended stay hotels on average, there is more privacy, and there are more locations available in urban downtown areas.

Corporate housing is highly customizable, so if you are traveling with children and pets you can settle right in just as if you were at home. Playpens and highchairs can be arranged. There are laundry facilities within the units unlike extended stay hotels. Sometimes there is access to tennis courts, sometimes basketball courts; in any case there are more exercise facilities than the hotels. The hotel bill is subject to taxes, while guests who stay over thirty days in corporate housing are not taxed on the rent.

Due to the growing number of corporate suite providers it is easy to find a website to scan through the available listings and the wide variety of decor. If a company has to send a manager to open an office in a city like Toronto for instance, the secretary or executive can enter "corporate suites Toronto" into a search bar and browse through the websites, enter the dates that apply, and then scan the vacant units and locations to decide. The reservation can be made with a quick phone call, and the unit is ready and waiting for the satisfied executive guest.

Things to Do While Stuck in Traffic - Part One

By: traffique

As a well honed commuting machine, with more miles under my belt than rings around Saturn, I've found in order to keep my sanity it is KEY to have things to do to keep my mind busy when driving in lots of traffic. Yes, we can all turn on the radio and listen to non-stop chatter and the same 25 songs played over and over and over again - but when you commute for over an hour every day each way that runs out of steam and interest fast. Nothing's more boring than the same old songs and the same old commercials on the radio.

Here is my list (part one) of other ideas to try. And remember - never do anything that impairs your driving skills and awareness!!

* IPOD or MP3 player

this will make your drive much more pleasant and much more interesting from the first moment you plug it into your car. You can choose your own music, books on tape or tv/movie or videos.

* Books-On-Tape

Novels, biographies, autobiographies, journals - expand your brain and let your mind have something new to think about.

* Learn a New Language

If you are in the car every day, you have a beautiful opportunity to learn a new language by listening to language CD's. Practice every day for 30 minutes, and in one year you will amaze yourself with what you have learned!

* Make up a Silly Game with yourself

Count how many red cars you see one way on your commute - or practice mathmatical equations in your head - or write a song and sing it all the way home - or imagine what amazing new recipe you're going to cook this weekend - or plan your next dream trip.

* Return Calls

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Crew Life – Behind the Scenes Onboard a Cruise Ship

Have you ever wondered what it’s like working onboard a cruise ship? Below the passenger decks is a whole other world that we rarely see or hear about. Here we give you an opportunity to find out what really goes on down there…

Laura Fletcher, 26, recently returned from her position as shore excursion staff with Norwegian Cruise Lines. She has worked on the Norwegian Star, Spirit and Pearl on itineraries around Alaska and the Caribbean. In our interview, Laura tells us the good, the bad and the ugly of her time onboard.

How did you manage to get a job on a cruise ship?

With great difficulty! I initially applied directly to the cruise lines, but received very little response. I then did a bit more research and decided that NCL was the company I wanted to work for, I then applied to an agency in Southampton that dealt with cruise ship placements, and they quickly found a position that was suitable for me.

What was your position onboard?

I worked as part of the shore excursions team, so I was responsible for organizing and selling tours as well as ensuring the trips went smoothly and of course dealing with any problems that may arise, which they usually did! My first contract was for 5 months in Alaska, followed by a 2 month break, then I flew out and joined the Norwegian Spirit in the Caribbean. My final contract was on the beautiful Norwegian Pearl in Mexico.

What were your first impressions of life onboard?

Boarding the ship for the first time was very daunting, I remember our coach arriving in the Port of Seattle, and seeing the Norwegian Star. It was the first cruise ship I had ever seen and initially I just thought about how tiny I felt against the 14 deck ship in front of me!

Once onboard, it was all very overwhelming. There was so much to take in and learn, ship safety procedures, destinations on the itinerary and tours offered all had to be learned inside out.

Before I left the UK, although everyone said it was hard work, I must admit, I thought my experience would be about seeing the world, the people I’d meet and some work, in that order.

At this point, the reality of the work kicked in! I think I had underestimated how much I would be doing and the responsibility I had taken on.

Once the passengers arrived, and the tours began, I started seeing all the places I had learned about onboard and experienced each of the shore excursions first hand. After a few weeks I had been on every tour and explored each part of the destination by land, air and sea!

What was your accommodation like?

During my first contract, I got lucky and shared my cabin with just one other crew member. The cabin was pretty large, en suite with my own drawers and cupboard space. When I started my second contract, on the Norwegian Spirit, I ended up in a top bunk in a much smaller cabin.

Does the accommodation vary depending on job role?

Yes, whilst all cabins are en suite, they do vary in size and numbers sharing each cabin. For example, house keeping staff may share a cabin with 4-6 others, whereas cruise staff get a slightly better deal and will usually end up sharing with just 4-2 others. All were comfortable and cabins were viewed purely for sleeping in.

What happens at meal times?

Meals are available to crew at 3 set times a day, with snacks available in between. Food wasn’t bad, although nothing like the guests were being served! We would always make the most of the local food when we were on a break and in port, local delicacies and fresh fish beats the crew meals every time!

How many days off did you get each week?

None! Crew members work pretty much every day of the week with a few hours off here and there. During my little free time I would be straight off the ship and into the port, or, if it was a place I had already explored I would use the time to do laundry or just relax. There was also a gym, a pool, games room and a bar for crew to make use of in free time. We made the most of free evenings with crew parties and other fun events organized by crew welfare, this is when we would often get passengers poking their heads around doors to see where all the fun was really happening!

What was the hardest part of your job…?

Without a doubt, the long hours. It was hard work, but the job itself was wonderful, I had good days, when customers thanked me for recommending great tours, and bad days, which made being away from home, friends and family so much harder. Each cabin had a telephone and we had calling cards, so there were plenty of opportunities to call home when things weren’t going so good.

Having to remain polite when passengers were rude was also very challenging for me!

…And the best part?

The places you get to see! No other job lets you go kayaking in Dominica one day, then sunbathing in Mexico the next. Working and living with a great group of people means you build close relationships with people from all over the world.

Were there ever any crew – passenger romances?

No never! Any staff caught having a relationship with passengers would have been sacked. Funnily enough, it seemed to be the passengers trying their luck with the crew members after a few too many cocktails at the 70’s or 80’s party nights!

How did the crew get paid?

Wages were settled through finance and were paid directly into my bank account back home. For onboard spending we had crew cards which were linked to our accounts.

Depending on your position, you get paid different wages. Those who are in direct contact with passengers will get paid cash tips in addition to their set wage. The crew who are not involved directly, such as laundry staff, don’t get a share of the tips, and are on a much lower wage. These tend to be crew that can’t speak English to a high enough standard. This may seem harsh, but when you consider all food, accommodation and living expenses are taken care of by the cruise line, the money they receive is all theirs to keep.

What skills do you think someone would need to do the job?

For my particular role, you definitely have to be a people person to be able to interact with all different kinds of people. You have to be extrovert, sociable and know how to have fun! It is also really important to be responsible; looking after a group of people who are in a strange country away from home is a big job, so you have to have good leadership skills too.

So next time you go cruising, spare a thought for the “other worldâ€‌ onboard and the excellent job they do which makes your experience what it is.
